Teacher at New Haven’s Common Ground high school connects kids with nature
By: Abbe Smith, Register Staff
A field trip program at Common Ground Environmental High School gives students a rare chance in the digital age to step outside, pull a carrot out of the ground and learn an invaluable lesson about where food comes from.
Jill Keating Herbst, environmental educator and manager of the magnet school’s field trip program, teaches visiting students about organic farming, raising livestock and forest ecosystems. But more important, she ties her lessons to what the students are learning in the classroom.
For her hard work and dedication to connecting kids with nature, Keating Herbst was named educator of the year by the Farm-Based Education Association. She received the award at the association’s conference early last month at Shelburne Farms in Vermont.
