Ages 13+

Our Junior Counselors are enthusiastic, energetic volunteers who learn about responsibility and working on a team as they partner with camp counselors and camp teachers to lead activities, play games, and participate in all aspects of camp. Most JC’s are 13 and 14 years old, but we are happy to have older applicants who love children and nature. Junior Counselors must have attended Common Ground for a minimum of one summer or one academic year of after school programs before joining us a Junior Counselor.

Training and supervision are part of the JC program, however we ask that JC’s have the motivation and maturity to participate as role models for campers ages 4 – 10 years old. It is important that the JC feel ready and excited to take on this role (with support from our JC head teacher, of course!). Junior Counselors must be able to refrain from cursing or other inappropriate language, have the impulse control to keep hands to themselves and not engage in horseplay with small children, and agree to keep their phone put away at all times during camp. Please call the camp director at 203-389-4333 x 1213 if you have questions about whether or not this might be a good fit for your child.

Note that we typically do NOT place Junior Counselors in the same group as their friend – JC’s are joining us to focus on being helpers in camp, not to be with their JC friend, and we usually find that placing friends together means they have a harder time fully participating in camp.

Junior Counselors may be registered for whatever weeks best fit your family schedule – we understand that family summer plans can be complicated! If possible, it is highly recommended that JC’s participate for a minimum of two weeks.  This allows them to learn the routines of camp and truly be a part of their staff team. An optional orientation meeting is offered at the end of June (date TBD).

Documentation of community service hours will be provided for all JC’s. A week of camp is 32.5 community service hours, if fully attended.

Camper/Staff ratio: One head teacher coordinates the experience for the Junior Counselors.

All Junior Counselors will receive a camp staff t-shirt, a water bottle, and a camp hoodie!
