NEW HAVEN — Common Ground High School students Andrew Velasquez, Ariana Rodriguez and Carlos Granda headed out on a recent afternoon into gentle waters of the West River.
Using a variety of instruments, they methodically measured the temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen in the brackish, tide-influenced water in eight locations as far upstream as the Edgewood Park duck pond.
It was all part of one of the largest wetlands restoration efforts ever in a Connecticut urban area.
