Organization Overview

Common Ground High School, founded in 1997, is the nation’s oldest environmental charter high school. We use our unique 20-acre campus as a laboratory to provide challenging, relevant learning experiences that develop academic excellence and prepare our students for college.  With only 195 students, Common Ground is able to challenge and support each individual as they attain the knowledge and skills they need to be engaged citizens, powerful environmental leaders, and successful college graduates.  Over 90% of Common Ground students go on to college, bringing with them the unique perspective that comes from the mix of real world experience, small school support, environmental awareness, learning through leadership and consistently high academic expectations provided by Common Ground High School.  At Common Ground, a truly diverse community of 195 students from 16 different towns experiences a mix of high academic standards, active learning and leadership opportunities, and small school supports that are producing dramatic educational results.

Job Description

Common Ground provides a wide range of academic, emotional, and behavioral supports to its students, including a variety of high quality after school enrichment opportunities. The Student Support Assistant assists the Assistant Director and Director of the school with student support initiatives.  The Student Support Assistant also assists with the oversight of all aspects of the Homework Center, and ensures the provision of a safe and quiet work environment to support student completion of assignments.

Responsibilities of the Student Support Assistant/Homework Center Coordinator include:

Assisting Assistant Director with facilitation of school attendance policy

  • Make telephone contact, send letters and schedule meetings with parents/guardians as needed
  • Schedule interventions for truant students (make-up hours, etc.)
  • Liaison with teaching staff as needed

Promoting student academic achievement

  • Create and implement a system to systematically gather and review student achievement information
  • Review mid-term progress reports and final report cards
  • Make telephone contact, send letters and schedule meetings with parents/guardians as needed
  • Coordinate credit recovery
  • Attend and take notes and Student Support Team meetings

Providing intervention support

Managing and assisting with planning and delivery of summer school for academic recovery and incoming freshmen.

Establishing and maintaining an effective Homework Center for all students.

  • Establish and communicate Homework Center policies and procedures for volunteer student participants.
  • Help supervise Homework Center from 3:30-5:30 pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday
  • Ensure staff and volunteers provide support to all students in Homework Center.

Developing and maintaining an effective communication system among students, teaching staff, administration and parents.

  • Assist coordinator in developing and maintaining a communication system to notify teachers and administrators of work completion and progress.
  • Assist coordinator in developing and maintaining a communication system to notify parents of Homework Center usage.
  • Assist coordinator in developing a policy for students who are over-scheduled with other after school obligations. Additionally, develop a plan for students who tend to remain in Homework Center on the same assignment for a long period of time.

Tracking and monitoring progress of After School Students:

Assist manager with monthly report on Homework Center attendance, completion,  and volunteers for the School Director, Assistant Director, Student Affairs Manager, and other school staff.

Reporting to Cayen Software monthly.

Additional responsibilities:
  • Assist with collaterals, including supervision of common areas during lunch, passing times, and after school at the bus stop.
  • Provide substitute coverage throughout the school year as needed, including subbing for teacher coverage during meetings and guidance
  •  Provide support to administrative staff as needed
  • Attend meetings regarding the Homework Center
  • Supervise bus stop as needed

Qualifications
  • College degree preferred
  • Excellent proficiency with Excel
  • Excellent organization and management, data management, and paperwork/reporting skills – including proficiency with database applications.
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Program coordination/management skills and experience.
  • Youth management and supervision skills and experience.
  • Demonstrated belief that all students can achieve at a high level
