New Haven Register: Teachers, students, volunteers build ‘schoolyard habitat’ at Davis Street school in New Haven

NEW HAVEN >> Apartment living in New Haven doesn’t always lend itself to having a garden, and that was a difficult thing to get used to for a newly graduated biology student from Southern Connecticut State University.

So when Elena Augusewicz, 26, saw the garden at Davis Street Arts and Academics Interdistrict Magnet School neglected during the summer months, she called and asked whether she could do something about it.

But thanks to a new grant from Audubon Connecticut to the school, Augusewicz may not be alone in her summertime efforts to water plants and pull weeds.

The Davis Street School has begun construction of its new schoolyard habitat, essentially revamping an existing garden there, according to Suzannah Holsenbeck, the schoolyard habitat program manager at Common Ground High School.
